A P63-MILLION bulk water project will be established in Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) to address the island’s lack of potable water supply.Jennifer Cariaga, tourism and investment officer of Igacos, said yesterday in Wednesdays @ Habi at Kape in Abreeza Mall that the project will help address the lack of water supply in the island.
“This would be operated by the government,” Cariaga said as at present, its main potable water source is in Hagimit.

The city government, she said, pushed for the establishment of the bulk water project to address the water supply needs of the population, tourists and the businesses, including about 60 beach resorts, in the island.

As of 2015, the Philippine Statistics Authority registered 104,123 people in Igacos.

Cariaga said the Igacos also registered an increase in tourist arrivals, which reached to 1.313 million last year from 1.054 million in 2016. The island, she said, is expected to welcome an increase of 10% in tourist arrivals this year.

The bulk water project is among the priority projects of the local government of the island.

Mario Pacaldo, head of City Planning and Development Office of Igacos, told the TIMES that the implementation of the project will be spearheaded by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

“We do not have any idea (yet) for the timeline of implementation,” Pacaldo said. (KMF)
