The Department of Tourism (DoT) remains optimistic that the multi-million Davao-Samal bridge project would push through during the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.

This was confirmed by Tourism Assistant Secretary for Mindanao Eden David, who said that the project could be implemented by 2019. According to her, funding for the conduct of the full feasibility study (FS) and construction of the bridge has been allocated by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo said they were assured by DPWH that the money is available for the full implementation of the FS including the plan, program of works and design of the bridge.

The Davao-Samal Bridge is among the projects which the DPWH is pursuing following the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte to increase infrastructure spending.

The Davao-Samal Bridge project will pave economic growth to both Davao City and Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) and ease traffic from the island to the main land.

Teo was one of those who strongly endorsed the bridge project as part of the DPWH-DOT Convergence Program. The bridge project was strongly endorsed by former Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario to the Regional Development Council (RDC) 11 for inclusion in the regional development priorities in 2015.

The initial proposal was P6-billion for a 1.2-kilometer bridge that will connect Davao City and the Island Garden City of Samal (IGCS). It was proposed for enrolment under the public-private-partnership (PPP) infrastructure projects.

Del Rosario earlier recalled that a pre-feasibility analysis on the project was done in 2002 within the framework of the Davao Integrated Development Program (DIDP) Master Plan.

The bridge will link up and bring tremendous trade returns and tourism prospects to the island, which is included in the country’s master plan for tourism development. This will boost tourism and investment, as well as, hasten the socio-economic development in the island, by lowering the cost and speeding up transport of people, goods and resources, he added.
